Fun Happy Birthday
In early times people believed that evil spirits became interested in a person on their birthday. A celebration was held to thwart these evil intentions. These celebrations eventually became the defacto birthday party fun stuff.  The one thing that makes a fun happy birthday so different is that it is your special day for you alone. You are sourrounded by friends and family as the star of the show so to speak. In places that speak the English language it is part of the tradition to sing the fun happy birthday song. This is done as the birthday cake is presented to the celebrant. The cake will have lit candles in the number representing the age of the birthday person. The birthday celebrant blows out the candles and makes a wish. If the person keeps the wish a secret it is supposed to come true.
In addition to the party, it is the custom to give gifts to the honored birthday person. The custom is especially fun when it is a childs fun stuff happy birthday. The gifts will be wrapped in colorful paper which flies in every direction as the youngster rips into the packages. Also for the younger children there may be games to play for themselves and their invited young friends. One of the old favorite games is Pin The Tail On The donkey. For older children and adults a fun happy birthday dinner at a fine restaurant may be in order. Reservations will be made for the number of persons attending the dinner and a request for a birthday cake to be presented at the end of the dinner will be properly noted. After the dinner is consumed the cake will be brought out by a group of the restaurant employees singing and beating on a drum and tooting horns. Usually the birthday person is not told in advance that all this fun stuff will happen. However, I am quite sure that everyone knows that it is a sure thing.
The famous Fun Happy birthday song was written in the 1890s and the descendants of the writers still get royalties from its performance in movies and on TV.
The birthday cake tradition comes from ancient Greece where it was made sweet to carry good will up to the sky and bless the birthday person.
The use of astrological signs to note the fun happy birthday was and is not limited to western style astrology. For instance, in India, Vedic astrology is used and in China, Chinese astrology has been used for thousands of years. even in the ancient past such cultures as the Egyptian and Myan had their own systems to mark the signs a person was born under.
The birthdays of historically important people are often celebrated for centuries after their lifetime. Some of these remembered birthdays are turned into holidays such as the birth of Jesus.
The one true glitch in all this is because of the western calendar. If a person is born on february 29th on a leap year they must choose to celebrate their birthday either on february 28th or on March 1st in normal years.
