Fun Weddings
At the dawn of time, there were no fun weddings. Ugg the caveman bopped the pretty cave girl on the head and carried her off to be his mate - or so the tale goes.
For the caveman this was probably the worlds first fun wedding. Actually modern anthropoligists believe it didn't really happen that way at all. The more likely scenario was that the group the caveman belonged to had much to say about the choice of a mate. It is believed that arrangements were made with other groups of cavemen for formal companionship. This would help cement the relationship between groups allowing for a more peaceful existence. One of the side benefits was that this practice limited inbreeding among the tribe.
As time went on the relationship between men and women became more integrated into the social structure of the ethnic group. The tribes became organized into city states, which in turn became the basis for nations. In these times it was understood that the groom had not yet met his wife when they were married. It was the prophet Mohammed who stated that the couple who were to be married should meet each other before the wedding.
In some oriental areas of the world a go between was used to arrange the fun wedding between the two intended families. In ancient Japan, the bride was not allowed to live with her husband until a child was produced by the couple.
Egypt:
It is to the ancient empire of Egypt we look for the beginnings of modern marriage. While it is true the Pharaohs took their own sisters and daughters in marriage, it was not true of the common Egyptian. The Pharaohs practiced inbreeding to keep the royal line pure. In lower class Egyptian life marriage existed as a legally enforceable act. The wives had more rights under this system than any other ancient people, with the right of divorce. The idea of an engagement was also invented by the Egyptians. This was done so the couples could get to know each other better. When the time came to marry, there was a contract which set forth the rights and duties of each party to the agreement. There was also a dowry presented by the groom to show his ability to support his new wife. He was also required to present to her an expensive gift of gold or a gem as a wedding present. After the fun wedding there would be fun stuff and a huge feast and the couple would go away for some private time together. This was perhaps the first honeymoon.
Rome:
Since the Roman Empire was so large and varied among its constituents, we will concentrate on the area of Rome itself and its fun wedding traditions. The wedded lives of the rulers of the Roman Empire were filled with controversy, intrigue and even murder to the extent that it would take a book to list all the possibilities. Fortunately weddings were less prone to drama for the common people.
In Rome, weddings were arranged by the fathers of the sons and daughters. While this might seem to be a throwback to earlier times, it was also true that the two people who were to be married could bow out of the wedding.
Blood relation could not marry each other. Nor could slaves be married unless they were freed. The bride had to be at least 12 years old, and the groom had to be at least 13. This seems very young to us now. However, the life span of these people in ancient times was quite short by todays standards and an early start was necessary in order to raise a family.
Tradition called for the bride to wear a white dress and have her hair done up in the manner of the Vestal Virgins. She would wear a veil to signify marriage unto death. The groom had no special clothing to wear. The couple broke bread together and exchanged vows while holding hands.
After the wedding the groom and his family went to his home so he could welcome his new bride and carry her over the threshold. Then the wedding feast could commence.
It would be impossible to list all the ways that people from various cultures and religious groups have practiced the wedding ceremony. What we have tried to accomplish here is to provide some insight into the origins of the traditions of the fun wedding still practiced today.
For several centuries it has been the tradition to hold the wedding ceremony in a religious building such as a church or synagogue. Today, in the 21st century, ministers, rabbis and priests are conducting wedding services in a variety of interesting and romantic fun places. Among other fun things, we will explore some of the places that have weddings information available to hold your fun wedding.
